Jesus meaning can be found in Matthew 1:21
In this Scripture, an angel of the Lord spoke to Joseph in a dream concerning the child that was in the womb of Mary his wife.
The angel told Joseph that the child was placed in Mary's womb by the power of the Holy Ghost; and the child will be a male and he must call His name Jesus because "He shall SAVE His people" from their sins.
The angel of the Lord did not just give Joseph the name for the child, but also the meaning and reason for that powerful name of Jesus.
The reason for calling Him Jesus was because He would be the Savior of the world. Jesus was God manifested in flesh, so He had the power to choose any name He wanted, like: general, most excellent, honorable, great etc.
Jesus didn't mind those high and powerful titles, He was contented to know that His name Jesus means Savior, because for that reason He came.
The Greek name Jesus is the same as the Hebrew name Joshua in the old testament.
When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming to him for baptism, John the Baptist said: "Behold, the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world." John 1:29
The term "Lamb of God," was referring to the sacrifice and agony that Jesus was supposed to endure upon the cross.
The statement: "Lamb of God," is another revelation of the fact that the name Jesus means Savior, because He was suppose to save you and I by way of His sacrificial death upon the cross. John 1:36
Throughout the Old Testament, whenever the people sinned against God, there were always the shedding of blood to make atonement for their sins.
Because without the shedding of blood, there could be no remission of sins. Leviticus 17:11
The blood of those animals obviously could not have saved us from our sins. They were killed daily, but Jesus was killed once, and His shed blood have the power to save the world from sin.
The name Jesus is originated from the Hebrew name Yeshua; which means to redeem, deliver or rescue.
This Hebrew Jesus meaning is similar to the Greek "Savior."
The 2004 film, "Passion of Christ" uses Yeshua for the name Jesus.
Yeshua is also used in the historical recordings of the Israelites.
However, whether we have:
They are all pointing to one person, and that is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who came and died for our sins.
As was pointed out before, the meaning of the name Jesus is: "Savior." He came so that His shed blood would cleanse you and I from our sins.
God manifested Himself in flesh through Jesus Christ. The reason for this manifestation was to prepare a doorway for us to be cleansed and redeemed from our sins.
The only way this would be possible was through His death, because without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sins. Hebrews 9:22
Since Jesus is the reason for our salvation and sanctification, let us not harden our hearts and stiffen our necks at the preaching of the gospel.
Let us repent of our sins, follow the salvation plan and humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that we can be in the number when the saints shall go marching in.
