The term: "defend your faith," is also associated with the word apologetic. Apologetic from a Christian perspective is; "to defend your religious doctrine and stand up against every teachings that are contrary to the Scriptures."
Christian apologetics is a branch of Christian theology which defends the Christian faith.
Some well known Christian apologetics are: Paul the Apostle from the early church, and other writers like Origen, Tertullian, Justine Martyr, Thomas Aquinas and Anselm of Canterbury.
The wisdom of Solomon in the first century, is believed to have elements of the works of the Jewish apologetics.
However, in a nutshell; apologetic simply means to defend your faith as a Christian and be firm in what you believe in.
As a Christian; you will, from time to time, come up on persons who do not believe in what you believe in. This does not mean that you should stop believing in the teachings of the Bible, and start believing in a false doctrine. Absolutely not!
There will be oppositions in every aspect of your life, and just like how you defend your faith in God, you should also live a life that demonstrates the things that you preaches.
People don't always listen to everything that you say, but believe it or not, they will watch your every move. So you have to practice what you preach.
Be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lay in wait to deceive.
The Scripture above is telling us to not be like kids, who believe everything they hear and are easily led astray, and forget what they were taught. You have to be mature enough to stick to your belief even when the world is against you.
To be cast to and fro by every wind of doctrine, is the same as "the chaff which the wind driveth away."
The Bible is telling us to not be easily moved. We should be like the tree that is planted by the rivers of water, whose roots are firmly planted in the foundations of the soil.
2 Timothy 2:15
Study to show thyself approved, a workman that needeth not ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
When we talk about defending your Christian faith, we cannot begin the conversation without finding out how much you know your Bible.
The Bible is the foundation upon which your ability to defend your faith lies. The Scripture above is plain in the matter of studying the Bible, so you can be competent in dividing the word of truth.
Many Christians and ministers don't read their Bible, but they claim to be the biggest evangelists and preachers in the world. The truth is, people might follow you around for a while, but when they find out that you don't know what you are talking about, they will not hesitate to leave and find someone who truly knows the Word of God.
So you cannot take on somebody who does not believe in your faith and try to convince them if you have no knowledge of what you believe in.
This is why many Christians have kept silent when a nonbeliever poses a reluctant question to them. You need to get back to the Word of God and really study it for yourself so you will not feel intimidated by anybody.
Knowing the Word of God for yourself, will help you to defend your faith and preach the gospel more effectively.
One of the main reasons for defending your faith is to help other people who have no knowledge of the gospel to understand it. Because many persons have listen to people who know nothing about God or His Word, but speaks like they do.
You have an opportunity to enlighten them, so that they can have a good understanding of what your faith is all about.
This is why you need to have full knowledge of your faith, so that when you start to share the good news with those who are in the dark, you can do so with confidence instead of fear.
1 Peter 3:15 says:
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.
God wants us as Christians to be ready to defend our faith, every time there is a particular situation that requires us to do so. However, we should do so in love, meekness and fear, because we don't want to destroy a soul by getting aggressive. When we defend our faith, it should bring others to a relationship with Jesus not push them away.
No matter how young you might be to the Christian faith, you should never let anybody impose their belief on you. You will not be able to quote Scriptures like Paul as yet, but there is a whole lot to learn and you just cannot give up before you have a chance to become fully mature in your faith.
With all that I have said, you have to know why you need to defend your faith, and that knowledge can only be achieved through the reading of the Word of God and by prayer and fasting.
It is your job to defend your Christian faith. You should play your part and not sit around and let those who don't even know what they are saying stop you from standing on the promises of God.
In this world, there will be times when you will have to fight for what you believe in. Your faith in God is one of them. You must not be afraid to speak up whenever you see that some light needs to be shed upon a dark conversation.
You are the light of the world, so be that light and inspiration that you know will give god the glory. God did not call you to sit and warm the church benches, He called you to work because the workers in the Christian faith are few.
Play your part, and defend the Christian faith, and stand up for the truth of the gospel. Be an example of the believer!
