Spiritual Fasting Explained.

Spiritual Fasting Explained

What is Spiritual Fasting?

Spiritual fasting is not to lose weight it is not to show your neighbour that you can go without food longer than they can.

Spiritual fasting is when you decide to put food, sex, television, internet, smart phones and all the things that you really like, aside, in order to get closer to God.

Matthew 6:16-18

Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

Spiritual fasting should not be done to let others know that you are fasting. The Bible said anoint your head and wash your face, that you do not appear unto men to be fasting but rather unto God.

Whenever you go on spiritual fasting, you should always seek to do it from a biblical perspective. You shouldn't start a spiritual fast and do not know why you are fasting, what time the fasting starts and what time it will end.

You also need to have a purpose for fasting. You should be fasting to achieve some result in the end. God is only moved by faith, and fasting is a great act of faith.

Spiritual fasting is; denying your body of its physical needs in order to focus more on God and less on you. The act of physically denying yourself of bodily gratification is an act of faith.

What God Says Not to do While Fasting.

We are not fasting unto ourselves but unto God. Therefore it is of significant importance that we understand what God is saying and what He expects from our fasting.

Isaiah 58:3-5

Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the Lord?

  1. You cannot have pleasure while you are fasting.

You should not find pleasure when you are on fasting. The Bible described fasting as afflicting the soul. Therefore, there should be no pleasure involved while you are on a spiritual fasting seeking the face of the Lord. All your focus and meditation should be upon the Lord.

2.  Do not quarrel with others while you are fasting.

You cannot be in an argument with another person while you are fasting unto the Almighty. If there is a time that you should seek peace with a brother or sister, it is while you are on a fast.

Let us seek rather to forgive our brother or sister for any wrong they might have done us. Because Jesus told the Apostle Peter that if his brother offended him, he should forgive him not seven times but seventy times seven. (Matthew 18:21&22)

3.  Do not fight while on fasting.

This one might seem obvious. However, there were people who used to fight while they were on fasting. How can I seek to fight or war with my brother while I am on a spiritual fasting? And yet these were the kind of ways in which the Israelites would operate.

These Scriptures were written for our learning and to help us to not make the same mistakes as our fathers.  The more we study the Scriptures, the closer to God we become.

What God Expects us to do on a Fasting.

There are some things that God expects of us when we are fasting. We need to seek to please God not ourselves. Let us go back to the Scriptures to understand what God looks for in a spiritual fasting.

Isaiah 58:6-8

Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward.

1. Loose the bond of wickedness.

Spiritual fasting will give you a breakthrough from spiritual wickedness in your life. This type of wickedness has to do with demonic attack, spiritual wickedness in high places and witchcraft. Spiritual fasting, when done the right way will set you free from every bond of wickedness.

2.  Undo heavy burdens.

Many persons have burdens carrying all their lives. Many persons got their hearts broken at one point or the other. The pain of those scares, wounds and burses have been excruciating. God is telling you that if you really need deliverance from those heavy burdens, spiritual fasting is the key.
