So if you are looking for ways to overcome temptations in your life, keep reading and please share this with other Christians that you know might be struggling to overcome temptations.
I wrote this article with you in mind because what you are about to read took me almost twenty years to get it right.
To overcome temptation in your life, you first need to identify exactly what it is that makes you sin against God.
James 1:14 kjv said:
But every man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed.
James made it very clear that there is a particular temptation / sin that is hard for you to resist. Whenever you are tempted with that particular sin, you tend to become very weak and eventually give in easily.
However, the real truth here is that you have enjoyed doing this ungodly deed in the past for a long time, and it has enticed you to the point of lustful gratifications.
It is not easy to stop doin something that you have enjoyed doing for so long.
Therefore you need to be aware of it, so that whenever it shows up, you can rebuke the devil and the deed in Jesus name.
Ephesians 6:11-12 said:
Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of the world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
In order to but on the whole armor of God, you need to know the Scriptures. Knowledge of the Scriptures are very important especially when you want to overcome temptations.
When you read the Bible, there is a power that it releases inside your spirit that will help you to resist and overcome temptation. The Word of God is a two-edged sword, when it enters your spirit, it decreases your appetite to sin.
The Word of God will strengthen you to fight the good fight of faith and overcome every plans of the enemy. You need to read chunks of the Bible in order to be strong enough to resist the urges to sin.
The more of God's Word you know, the less appetite you're going to have for flesh gratifications.
The more consistent you are in reading your Bible, the more strength you will gain to fight the good fight of faith and overcome temptations.
The Word of God is like a charger, it reenergizes and equipped you to walk on the straight and narrow road and keep doing the will of God.
The Word of God is referred to as the Sword of the Spirit and also as a Two-edged Sword.
What does this means?
This means that the Word of God is a weapon fully equipped to cut away every temptation that is stopping you from fulfilling the purpose of God in your life.
Matthew 26:41 said:
Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak.
When you are tempted to sin against God, get in the habit of seeking God's help through prayer.
When you pray, there is a spiritual connection between you and God, that refocuses your attention from the temptation and back to God.
What is prayer?
Prayer is simply communicating with God.
When God sees you seeking His help through prayer, He will definitely come to your rescue.
It is best to seek the help of the Lord through prayer and not take matters into your own hands.
When you chooses to pray rather than giving in to the temptation, you are demonstrating that you rather to please God than to give in to the temptation.
It is not easy to kneel and pray when the devil is tempting you with something that you have enjoyed doing in the past.
However, in order to maintain your integrity in the Lord, you need to surrender yourself completely to Him in prayer.
There are some things that your flesh loves to do, but those things will pull you away from God.
Whenever this particular thing shows up, it makes you very vulnerable.
To defeat this giant when it shows up, you need prayer, you need fasting and you need the reading of the Word of God.
Know the things that make you sin against God and you will know exactly which temptation to ask God to help you to overcome.
When you read your Bible, you will eliminate the temptation to sin because the Word of God is a weapon against transgressions.
Consistently read your Bible and meditate upon the Lord your God and the desire to sin will be subside.
Remember to pray.
You cannot fight the devil on your own, you need to seek the help of the Lord and you can only do that through prayer.
I hope you were encouraged.

God bless you.
