Why Self Control is so Important?

Humility and self control.

Humility is a significant self control weapon. Therefore, we need to learn to be humble and obedient to the Word of God, and God will exalt us and give us the ability to control ourselves.

1 Peter 5:6-8 (KJV)

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

When we humble ourselves under God's mighty hand, He lift us up and places us to great height. However, when God blesses us with great possessions, the responsibility for self control becomes more enormous.

We need to cast all our cares upon Him for He careth for us. Commitment to God's will requires a great deal of self control.

Because to do the work of the Lord effectively, we need to let go completely, and let God take full control.

The battle is not ours; the battle is the Lord's. The Bible teaches that we should ask, and it will be given, seek, and we will find, knock, and the door will be open unto us.

If we are truly going to control your urges, and control our fears, and control desires, we need the help of the LORD GOD Himself. This is why the song writer encouraged us to take our burdens to the Lord and leave it there.

Since the devil is walking around like a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour, let us be sober, and vigilant, and sincere in the work of the Lord that we have the strength to overcome the temptations of the enemy. (satan)

1 Thessalonians 5:6

Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

This Scripture speaks of self control in the sense of spiritually sleeping.  When we are spiritually asleep, we become spiritually blind and ineffective in the things of God.

Instead we need to watch and be sober, which means staying with the things of the Lord and leave the carnal stuff behind.

self control

If we are truly going to control your urges, and control our fears, and control desires, we need the help of the LORD GOD Himself.

Avoid The Things That Made You Sin.

  • In other words leave off every sin, because they will become rooted and easily beset us and throw us off course. Let us not partake in the things that are unholy:
  •  wine,
  •  smoking,
  •  cursing,
  •  backbiting,
  • malice keeping,
  •  hatefulness,
  •  lying,
  •  stealing,
  • killing,
  •  and the list could go on and on...

We need to keep ourselves from all these unholy desires so that God can give us greater self control powers, in return for our faithfulness.

Finish Well.

We need to study our Bible regularly and be obedient to what we read, in order to reach the level of self control and character that God is looking for.

1Corinthians 9:24-27

24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

When we run a physical race, we do not run to lose, we run to be the winner. The same concept goes for our Christian journey. Self control is significantly important if we truly desire to reach the finish line.

Let us keep our eyes stayed on the prize, because the road which we journey on as Christians, is not broad. The scripture said that it is a straight and narrow road.

Hence, in order to make it to the finish line we need to keep your eyes stayed on Christ Jesus our LORD.

Finishing well means that we put our body under subjection, and become unmovable in the things of the LORD.

The biblical truth is that flesh and blood cannot serve the LORD. God is a Spirit, and they that worship Him, must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

We also need to practise whatever we preach. Because, if we do not preach to ourselves before we preach to others, we should not be allowed to speak to a congregation.

Philippians 4:13

13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Here is another Bible verse which declares that when JESUS is the one that is strengthening us, there is absolutely nothing that we cannot overcome.

Therefore, if we need self control in order to finish well, we don't need to worry, because God is our help in times of trouble.

Proverbs 16:32

32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

When we control our anger, we already have some level of self control. Because the man who is able to control his anger is way better than many furious rulers.

Therefore I say, rule your own spirit, and you will excel above many persons in authority  who are struggling with personal weaknesses.

God bless you.
