The best example of spiritual growth is becoming more like Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Character

When we follow the leading of the Lord, we escape the corruption in the world caused by evil works of the devil.

What is spiritual growth?

Spiritual growth is detailed in

2 Peter 1:3

 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

 Jesus has given us His blessings of virtue and goodness to live godly in this life. When we live by them, we automatically participate in the divine nature and spiritual growth is accomplished.

When we follow the leading of the Lord, we escape the corruption in the world caused by evil works of the devil.

Here is another scripture that gives us a complete formula of the things that enhances spiritual growth:

2nd Peter 1:5-11

  • And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
  • 6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
  • And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
  • For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
  • 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
  • 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Importance of Spiritual Growth

Spiritual growth is when we  become more mature in our faith and  relationship with Jesus Christ. When we are growing spiritually we will become more and more like Christ.

The spiritually mature will be able to "distinguish good from evil" (Hebrews 5:14). Therefore spiritual growth begins the moment we decide to make Christ our personal Lord and Saviour, and should continue until we meet Him in the sky.

Spiritual growth is expected of the believer. The Apostle Paul, author of Hebrews, rebukes his readers for not making an effort to understand; (Hebrews 5:11) and for still being an infant (Hebrews 5:13).

The criticism leads to exhortation: "Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to perfection. (Hebrews 6:1). The apostle Peter says, "Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (2nd Peter 3:18).

Scripture offers valuable insights into how a Christian can grow spiritually. It is the Holy Ghost in the believer that gives us  the power and potential for spiritual growth.

(Acts 1:8;Ephesians 3:20). As we rely on the power of the Holy Ghost and follow the teachings our Lord, we can develop greater perfections.

Spiritual Growth and Trials

Since trials are a significant part of spiritual growth, we should be prepared to stand up to them whenever they show up.

Just as our physical muscles are built at the gym through exertion and straining against resistance, spiritual growth is developed in the hard times of life.

You must go through trials and temptations as a Christian. If not, you might need to check to see whether you really have a relation with Jesus. The Apostle James encourages us:

James 1:2-4

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Since spiritual growth comes through trials, Scripture teaches that we are not to grow weary in the process. A lot of spiritual development is as a result of persistence.

2 Thessalonians 3:13

 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

Galatians 6:9

 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Bless your soul.
